A century ago, one of the most remarkable human beings of the last millennium, the Austrian-born Rudolf Steiner, undertook to shift the direction of our emerging global civilization. He restored a holistic image of the human being to the center of cultural thought and set out to bring humanity’s soul and spiritual resources back into balance with materialistic science, technology, and economics. Trained as a scientist but also a profound esoteric researcher, Steiner developed resources for every individual to evolve herself or himself as a free and creative local change agent in planetary life. Oct. 4 • Anthroposophy: The Consciousness of Our Humanity with Professor Frederick Amrine and Editor John Beck • Steiner’s “spiritual science” aims to awaken just those powers of perception which are excluded in materialistic culture. So we rediscover the cosmic significance of being human and the pattern of repeated lives, and begin to take part as co-designers of the evolutionary plan.

Oct. 11 • Biodynamics: Nutrition for the Soul, Healing for the Earth with Paul Bantle and Annie Elder of The Community Farm of Ann Arbor • One of Steiner’s last initiatives, and a foundation for the organic movement, was biodynamic agriculture. Here, the human being stands as the conscious ego in a farm organism of animals, plants, and soil, open to sun, moon, and stars. The food produced works to support our awareness of interconnected life and of the cosmos.

Oct. 25 • Waldorf Education for the Whole Child with Teachers Lawrence Mathews and Mary Emery • Steiner is best known for his educational initiative, a response to an appeal by factory workers for an education for their children that would open up to them all of life’s opportunities. Waldorf sees the child as already a unique individual, going through archetypal stages of development which affect the needs and potential for learning. The teacher acts as a social artist, assisting each child in opening the fullest human potential. Peter Proctor, a farmer from New Zealand, started biodynamics in India over 15 years ago. Since that time, a biodynamic movement has started, that is sweeping the country.

Before Peter arrived 10,000 farmers were commiting suicide each year in India.  Industrial farming and modern chemicals can be thanked for this.
After 40 years of using "modern farming techniques"  the land was depleted and the farmers were in debt and starving.
Then Peter brought them Bio-dynamics and started a revolution.

Everywhere biodynamics were used the land came back to life, the soil softened from hard brick-like material to soft black soil, the air became cleaner and the water started to appear again.

More and more people are going biodynamic everyday, and the poisons and chemicals that were used are being broken down or are gone completely.

Farmers now have the strength to fight for their rights and are pushing out corporate control and standing their ground.

It is estimated that in 10 years the whole country will be biodynamic.

An Online Course with Eugene Schwartz
March 1st through April 1st, 2011

February 27, 2011 will mark the 150th anniversary of Rudolf Steiner’s birth. In conjunction with this, Eugene Schwartz has created a unique multi-media “Online Journey” that will both deepen and broaden our understanding of Steiner’s contributions to the modern world. He will explore Steiner’s biography, the times in which he lived, and, above all, the significance of his path of inner development for the individual, for humanity, and for the future of the Earth.

This online course will be six hours of audio and visual content, but it will divided into short, 15 - 30 minute segments that you may pause at any time. The segments may be listened to or watched as often as you wish during the month that they are online. Although these presentations are meant to be an introduction to the life and work of Rudolf Steiner, long-time students of Anthroposophy will find new insights as well.

About the Presenter:
Eugene Schwartz has been involved with the work of Rudolf Steiner for over 42 years, and he has been a Waldorf school teacher, an educator of teachers, and an educational consultant for 33 years. He has given nearly 2000 lectures on Waldorf education and Anthroposophy. He has had the privilege of knowing many individuals who knew Rudolf Steiner personally, while his work as a Waldorf consultant brings him into contact with thousands of individuals whose lives are interwoven with Anthroposophy today.

The major themes that will be covered:

1. Rudolf Steiner's life in the context of the times in which he lived. Steiner's strivings and accomplishments will be viewed in relationship to some of the cultural, spiritual, and political leaders of his age. In the course of Steiner’s lifetime, the US Civil War took place, the electric light, the automobile, and the airplane were invented, the Titanic sank, and the First World War erupted. How did these developments, and a host of others, form Rudolf Steiner’s nature and philosophy?

2. What is Anthroposophy? We will touch on some of the foundations of Steiner's worldview, particularly his research into the evolution of humanity and the world; the question of Good and Evil; reincarnation and karma; the role played by Western culture and Christianity; the relationship of science and spirituality. How much of Steiner’s research drew on the work of others? Were his innovations in many fields really original? How is it possible for one man to be an “authority” in so many fields?

3. Steiner's path of spiritual development. Although Steiner's "findings" are frequently cited by admirers and detractors alike, little is said about the methodology he used to arrive at those results. Steiner was unique among teachers of the "perennial wisdom" in his unfolding multiple paths to self-development and higher knowledge. We will look at the “philosophical path” as presented in The Philosophy of Freedom, and examine the meditative approach that lives in a work such as How To Know the Higher Worlds, and examine what was “new” in Steiner’s approach to these paths.

4. Rudolf Steiner and the future. 150 years is a long time gone in our fast-moving world. Does Steiner still have relevance for our times, not to speak of the future? Have such offshoots of Anthroposophy as Waldorf Education, Bio-Dynamic Farming, Anthroposophically-Enhanced Medicine etc strengthened Steiner’s contribution to modern life, or diluted his message? What was Steiner’s hope for our times?

Anyone with the following conditions may participate: Basal cell carcinoma, localized squamous cell, actinic keratosis, ulcerated breast cancer and undiagnosed new skin lesions. Participants will be given a cream to use on the lesion manufactured by Hiscia, and anthroposophic pharmacy in Germany, and will have a short exam. Exam and photo appointments will be conducted Tuesdays between 4:30 and 5:30pm (exams will be scheduled in 10 minute increments) for 3 consecutive weeks between Sep 28 and Oct 19, or Nov 30 and Dec 21.
